WORCESTER, Mass. – Algonquin field hockey was victorious in their bid for Central Division I championship again this year with a 1-0 win over top-seeded Wachusett on Friday.
Algonquin's Maggie Wraight lifted the Tomahawks with her goal that came with only three minutes left in the game.
"I knew I had to do all I could to get it in the net. I knew what it meant to my team," Wraight said of her goal. "It was such a good pass and I tried to tip it and it worked."
Friday's win marks the second time in two years that the Tomahawks have won the title.
"It's amazing to come back again," said Head Coach Daniel Welty. "The first time ever was last year, to come back to defend it and then winning it back-to-back was unbelievable."
The Tomahawks entered the game hoping to win their third of the season over Wachusett as the Mountaineers were trying to figure out how to beat the team that had handed them their only two losses of the year.
"It was a tight game, Wachusett showed us some different things today," Welty said. "We kept pushing and didn't lose confidence."
"They played well, it was the tightest and closest we played them all season," said Wachusett Head Coach Kerry Berry. "This third time was the best they had played them."
Berry said despite the loss she and her team were still proud of their season.
"They had to fight hard to get here and they had two tough teams to beat to get into the finals," Berry said. "This group of kids hasn't been in the finals ever and its been 18 years since Wachusett has been in the finals, so this was amazing."
Berry noted that Meg Dwyer and her entire defensive line played a great game on Friday.
Algonquin is looking ahead to the state finals, said Welty.
"We're taking it one game at a time," Welty said. "We looked too far ahead earlier in the season, that was our loss of Sept. 26. Ever since then it's been game by game."
