HOLDEN, Mass.  — As a result of their dedication throughout the school year, 91 Wachusett Regional High School juniors and seniors were able to join the ranks of the National Honor Society at Monday night's induction ceremony.

The new inductees would add to the 72 present members of the society, and students Rosalind Waltz-Peters, Elizabeth Fitch, Tyler Gibbs and Nicole Papazian led the program with a discussion of the society's four pillars: Scholarship, Service, Leadership and Character.

On scholarship, Waltz-Peters commended the perseverance of her fellow classmates, and spoke of the rich reward beyond the grade — knowledge.

"Those long nights, sighs, and wrinkles of confusion have sprouted spectacular results," she said. "We applaud you for this work, because you know it wasn't easy. You have taken your passion and determination and have run with them."

Yet in addition to excelling academically, the students have also been engaged in various community service efforts.

"They've reached out to help others, and spent countless hours servicing. They have put the needs of others before themselves," described Fitch.

"Waking up Saturday is hard enough, but to then volunteer with a smile and without pay is an even harder task, one that is certainly easier said then done. Your dedication and commitment to serving others in the midst of your academics, sports, and many other obligations is truly admirable."

On the pillar of leadership, Gibbs described the quality as "the courage to blaze an unmistakable new trail, leaving the world a better place," and said that "the students on the stage have show leadership today, and will be the leaders of tomorrow."

Finally, Papazian rounded out the society's pillars.

"In order to have the courage to be a leader, the motivation to be a scholar, and the compassion to volunteer, one must have a strong foundation of a good character," she said. "National Honor Society students stand out because of their well-rounded academic achievements, but I believe it is their strong character that makes them shine a little brighter than the rest."
