Daniel Castro studied English at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where he wrote for various collegiate publications before going on to work as the Education/City reporter for The Gardner News.

In 2010, he received the award for Best Sports Reporting from Central Mass Soccer Coaches for his coverage of the Wachusett boys and girls soccer teams.
