HOLDEN, Mass. — Drivers passing through the traffic lights at the intesection of Main and Shrewsbury Streets this week will have noticed the now fully illuminated electronic sign, a message board that will enable more frequent town notifications and community organizations to further publicize their events.

"We're still experimenting with what works best," said Town Manager Nancy Galkowski, who explained that they are still trying to determine the appropriate frequency and duration for each message so that vehicles traveling through the intersection have the opportunity to view all the messages.

"We'll be happy to listen to any constructive criticism from people who have seen it," said Galkowski.

Consisting of two 4' by 5' full color flat screens, the v-shaped sign board is visible from two directions at the intersection, and is controlled by fiber from the town office.

Messages that take priority are Emergency notifications; town information; school business  town-affiliated non-profits and events such as PTA events, pancake breakfasts, or spaghetti suppers; and events sponsored to benefit the Holden public, such as Red Cross Blood drives.

Any other messages would have to be approved by the Town Manager, but the board will not post about for-profit organizations, outside groups, religious messages or activities, or political activities aside from a candidates debate sponsored by an impartial group.

All non-town official notices cost $10 per notice.
